POLICY BRIEFINGS
Kyl to Resign at Year’s End
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) will resign from the Senate on Dec. 31. Kyl was appointed in September to fill the seat vacated by the death of Sen. John McCain (R). Kyl had previously implied that he only planned to serve in the Senate until the end of the year. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will appoint a replacement in the near future. Outgoing Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), who narrowly lost a race for Senate in November, or Kirk Adams, Ducey’s former Chief of Staff, are considered top candidates for the post. There will be a special election in November 2020 to serve the remaining two years of McCain’s term.
